Pest & Control in Tea

 Pest

They damage plants and leaves by their activities and minimize the crop upto 10-20% in Tea Plantation.

Always use PPC approved pesticide, Fungicide & Weedicide chemicals.


  • 1. Mites - They are in tiny size with 8 legs creature like a spider and damaging the leaves of tea plants.


  • A) Red Spider (Oligonychus Coffeae) - They are red colour mites. Damage leaves of tea plants and turn them into reddish, dry & then fall off.
  • Damage Nature - 8 -10% crop Loss.


  • Life Cycle - All mite have same life Cycle 
  1. Eggs →Larvae → Nymphs→Adult

  • Completion of life Cycle -

  1. In Summer - 7 - 10 days
  2. In Winter - 20 days

  • Eggs Hatching -

  1. Mar./April/Sept./Oct. - In 5-6 days
  2. May/June/ July/Aug.- In 4-5 days
  3. Nov./Dec./Jan./Feb. - 13 days



  • B) Scarlett Mite (Brevipalpus Phoenisis) - They are turn tea's leaf in opposite direction and damage it.


  • C) Pink Mite ( Acaphylla Theae) - They are in pink colour and damage like red Spider.


  • D) Purple Mite (Calacarus Carinatus) - They are in purple colour and damage like red Spider.


  • Control - All mites are control by 

  1. Propargite @ 300 ml/ 200 litres water
  2. Fenzaquine @ 400 ml/ 200 litres water
  3. Spiromesifen @ 200 ml/ 200 litres water
  4. Etoxazole @ 150 ml/ 200 litres water
  5. If Severe attack of Pest then apply the double dose pesticides 1 round for quick control.
  6. If necessary then mix chemicals according EC+Sticker+SL+SC+WSC+WP+WG+SG+ SP.


  • 2. Insects - A small pest which has 6 legs, 2 pair of wings and 3 part of body (Head, Thorax & Abdomen).


  • A) Tea Mosquito ( Helopeltis Theivora) - Green coloured mosquito type pest damage tes plant's leaves and turn them in black colour or dry, after a few days of infection untreated plants is started decaying.

  1. Order - Hemiptera, 
  2. Mouthpart - Piercing & Sucking type (bug)
  3. Modification of legs - walking & Clasping type.

  • Life Cycle -

  1. Eggs →Nymphs→Adult

  • Completion of life Cycle - In 14 - 15 days
  • 220 Eggs produced by a female in 1 time.


  • Natural Enemies of Helopeltis -

  1. Lynx Spider - 5-7 Adults eat in a day.
  2. Green Lacewing - 10-11 Nymphs eat in a hour
  3. Reduviid Bug - 6 Adults eat in a day.
  4. Dragon Fly - 20 - 50 Adults in a day.



  • B) Tea Thrips (Scirtothrips Dorsalis) - Tiny size lightly yellow coloured pest found in back side of tea's leaves & turn them in pale yellow colour also found white lines on leaves and their petiole.

  • Life Cycle -

  1. Eggs →Larvae → Nymphs→Pupa→Adult

  • Completion of life Cycle - In 13 - 14 days



  • C) Green Fly/Jassid (Empoasca Flavescens) - Small size white coloured pest found in back side of tea's leaves & curl them with cheking growth.
  • Life Cycle -

  1. Eggs →Nymphs→Adult

  • Completion of life Cycle - In 16 - 20 days



  • D) Aphids - They are small & white coloured sap sucking pest damage new flushing buds

  • Life Cycle -

  1. Eggs →Nymphs→Adult

  • Completion of life Cycle - In 20- 23 days



  • Control - All Insects are control by 


  • a) By Pesticides -

  1. Thiamethaxome @ 80 gr./ 200 litres water
  2. Quinalphos @ 500 ml/ 200 litres water
  3. Imidaclorpid @ 200 ml/ 200 litres water
  4. If Severe attack of Pest then apply the double dose (or mix contact+ systemic) pesticides 1 round for quick control.


  • b) By Herbal Extracts -

  1. Bitter Fern
  2. Water pepper
  3. Kata(Argemone Maxicana sp.)
  4. Akwan(Polygonum hamiltonni)
  5. Thatter(Ipomoea Convolvula)


  • i) Preparation of Herbal Extracts -

  1. Chop the plant materials
  2. Drying it under shade
  3. Powdering by grinding machine
  4. Soaking 5 kgs powder in 50 litres water for 2 days
  5. Vigorous Stirring
  6. Filtering it
  7. Made-up volume by 100 litres.


  • ii) Preparation of Neem leaf Extract -

  1. Materials -
  2. Neem Leaf - 10 kgs
  3. Garlic - 250 gram
  4. Cow's Urine - 50 Litres
  5. Copper Utensils - more capacity


  • Process -

  1. We take 50 Litres cow's Urine with 10 kgs neem leaves and 250 grams garlic in Copper Utensil
  2. After mixing them very well keep it for 10 days.
  3. After then boil the solution upto half of taken quantity (upto 25 litres).
  4. Spray ready solution in tea plantation @ 2 litres with 200 Litres water.



  • 3. Looper ( Buzura Suppressaria) - They are damaged & chew all leaves in form of Caterpillar.



  • 4. Bunch Caterpillars- Damaged as looper.


  • Life Cycle -

  1. Eggs →Caterpiller → Chrysalid→Adult

  • Completion of life Cycle - In 60 - 70 days


  • Control - All type of Caterpillars are controlled by 

  1.  Emamectin Benzoate @ 80 gr./ 200 litres water
  2. Flubendiamide @ 40 gr./ 200 litres water



  • 5. Red Slug - A Slug type red coloured pest with sticky mukus. They damage & chew the leaves of tea plants.



  • 6. Nettle Grubs - A green coloured pinching hairy grub type pest also damage leaves.


  • Life Cycle -

Eggs →Caterpiller(Slug) → Chrysalid→Adult

  • Completion of life Cycle - In 70 days


  • Control -

  1. Quinalphos @ 500 ml/ 200 litres water
  2. Emamectin Benzoate @ 80 gr./ 200 litres water
  3. Flubendiamide @ 40 gr./ 200 litres water



  • 7. Termites - A white Ant type pest damage stems & branches of tea plants.
  • Damage Nature - 15% Crop Loss.

  • Species -

  1. Odontoterms Species - Dead wood eater
  2. Microterms Species - Live wood eater (Microterms Pakistanicus)

  • Life Cycle -

          Eggs →Nymphs→Adult

  • Completion of life Cycle -
            In 9- 16 Months.

  • Type of Adult -

  1. Queen
  2. Female
  3. Male
  4. Workers
  5. Soldiers


  • Control -

  1. Chlorpyriphos @ 500 ml/ 200 litres water
  2. Phorate @ 10 gr./ Bush in root zone.
  3. Castor Cake @ 2-5 ton/ ha.
