Plucking in Tea

 Plucking

The tender apical portion of shoots consisting of two to three leaves and the terminal buds are nipped of in Plucking.

  • Plucking System - Shoots may be plucked above

  1. Basal Janams
  2. Janams & Fish Leaves
  3. Janams, Fish Leaves & Single foliage leaf.

  • Average Pluckers/ ha. - 10

  • Average Plucked leaves/Pluckers - 24 kgs

  • Plucking Rounds - Completion of Plucking is called Plucking round.

  1. Although 7 days round is most common.
  2. In year 30 - 32 rounds leaf plucked in a section or Tea Estate.

  • Laterals - The branches of the primaries(growing shoots) are the laterals of the first order.

  1. 10 orders of laterals can be produced in a year.

  • Plucking Standard - A bud & two leaves to be plucked.

  • Type of Plucking...

  1. Fine/Black Plucking - All 1 + Bud, All 2+ bud(Terminal bud & small 2 leaves & soft single Banjhies).
  2. Standard/Normal Plucking - Bud with small 2-3 leaves & soft single Banjhies.
  3. Medium Plucking - Bud with all 2-3 leaves & soft double Banjhies.
  4. Coarse Plucking - Bud with all 3-4 leaves & double Banjhies. (Generally Hard, black, coarse & big leaf is not allowed in quality tea manufacturing)

  • Step Up in Plucking - Raising by a leaf is called Step Up, it is advantageous in late October if the tea is to be kept Unprune in the following year.

  • Breaking Back - In this process remove (slightly skiff) the leaves & stems (which are not considered suitable for manufacturing) above the Plucking surface in order to maintain a flat surface.

  • Reason for Growth - With the process of Photosynthesis plants grow..
  • Photosynthesis - In the presence of light (673 kilocalorie) & Chlorophyll plants make their food (Carbohydrates/Glucose)  & Oxygen with the help of carbon dioxide & water.

  1. 6Co2+ 12H2O → C6H12O6+ 6H2O+6O2
  2. The Photosynthesis efficiency of a mature leaf gradually declines after 6 months.

  • Leaf drop - In tea after about 18 months plants drop his old leaves.

  • Dormancy in Tea -
  • The winter dormancy is in N.E. area because day length is low of 11 hour 15 minutes and also no photosynthesis in lower than 12°C & higher than 40°C of leaf temprature.
